DANCE MOViES Commission Screening

The DANCE MOViES Commission supports the creation of new works for the screen which vary widely in content and form but are all created by, or in collaboration with, a choreographer or movement-based artist. The four films premiering here represent the first commissioned projects in this program.

EMPAC first presented films and videos of this kind on the Rensselaer campus through its DANCE MOViES series over the course of 2005-2007. These curated programs were hour-long screenings which introduced the community to a genre that is rarely seen outside of the international dance film festival circuit.

As the only major commissioning program for dance film established in the US, the DANCE MOViES Commission is having a significant national and international impact, making the creation of new works possible, and inspiring artists in the field to form new collaborations. The second round of projects is underway and will premier in the fall of 2009.

The DANCE MOViES Commission is supported by EMPAC’s Jaffe Fund for Experimental Media and Performing Arts.

Film Descriptions:

Kino-Eye directed by Joby Emmons, choreographed by Elena Demyanenko (USA)—exploiting the technologies that constantly monitor us, Kino-Eye shadows a dancer through the public and private realms of contemporary Moscow. (8 minutes)

Veterans directed/choreographed by Victoria Marks, directed/edited by Margaret Williams (USA/UK)—five young veterans return to their civilian lives attempting to make peace with their military service. Performed and co-created by vets from the West Los Angeles VA combat rehab/ PTSD clinic. (18 minutes)

PH Propiedad Horizontal created by David Fariás, Carla Schillagi and Maria Fernanda Vallejos (Argentina)—a group of dancers use a narrow passageway, typical for Argentinean urban housing, to create an elegant, abstract, and lively piece of pure movement and form. (10 minutes)

Nora directed by Alla Kovgan and David Hinton, choreographed by Nora Chipaumire, soundscore by Thomas Mapfumo, produced by Joan Frosch (USA/Zimbabwe/Mozambique/UK) in association with Portland Green Cultural Projects, and Center for World Arts, University of Florida— a dense and swiftly moving poem of sound and image that tells the story of a dancer growing up in Zimbabwe (35 minutes)
